Home Automation Hacks for Mother’s Day
Moms are the best aren’t they? For years they work endlessly, putting your needs before their own; Making you breakfast lunch and dinner, cleaning up after you, helping you with homework, driving you to lessons and games… and so the list goes on. This year, you can pay it forward and help make Mom’s life easier when you implement these home automation hacks for Mother’s Day.
There are a number of home automation hacks for Mother’s Day. Options range from highly sophisticated control systems to easy DIY home renos, which are possible to complete in an afternoon while Mom serves up some refreshing lemonade.
Many people think home automation is expensive, which it can be for whole-house integrated systems. On the other hand, it is also relatively cheap to install a few individual systems with the right electric parts and a little elbow grease. Price tiers and levels of complexity for individual systems or whole-house installations vary greatly. With a few simple renovations, it’s affordable to turn Mom’s home into a smart home.
Home Automation Hacks for Mother’s Day
The top home automation project ideas are usually grouped into these five categories:
- Pet Care
- Outdoor Sprinkler Systems
There are many different possible home automation ideas in each category to either go big or keep it simple. Equipped with the Morai Motion line of small electric linear actuators combined with a few other cheap electric components, a bit of know-how and a few hours, you will make your Mom proud to show off her new smart home and, perhaps more importantly, what a great prodigy you have become.
The following home automation hacks for Mother’s Day are relatively fast, easy and cheap to install:
Automate Mom’s lights so they turn on/off on a pre-determined schedule, when certain conditions are triggered, or controlled with her smartphone.
Program Mom’s blinds so they open automatically during the day and shut at night. An additional automation idea to program that Mom will love, is to set the system so the blinds open/close depending on temperature.
Windows and skylights are easy to activate based upon a variety of condition options, such as:
- motion detection (Mom walks in/out of the room)
- time of day
- any combination of these events
When the specific programmed events occur, the small electric linear actuator will open or close the window or skylight.
The best gift for Mom is the gift of security. She needs to know that everyone she cares about, especially her family and herself, and her home are all safe and secure. It also gives you peace of mind knowing she is safe when you are not there.
Miniature linear actuators function like bolts. Your Mom gets a powerful security system that complements her current key lock. These motorized “bolts” are small and easy to install in doors, windows, hidden compartments such as cupboard or a safe, or anywhere else she has someone/thing that needs secure protection.
The electromechanical actuators also have a number of ways which which to activate them. Most common methods of control are:
- secret switch
- keypad code entry
- smartphone control
- motion sensor
Vents for such functions like heating and cooling are excellent home automation hacks for Mother’s Day. Add a temperature/humidity sensor, motion sensor, timer or combination to ensure Mom is comfortable in any weather. She never needs to adjust a dial again (this should also make Dad happy).
4. Pet Care
Save Mom time and worry when it comes to caring for her furry companions. Automate her pet door or pet food rations using a micro linear actuator to open and close the door. Time of day, motion detection or NFC/RFID tags are common ways for her pet to be let out/in or supplied with a yummy portion of food. This way Mom goes about her daily business knowing her furbabies are safe and well fed.
5. Outdoor Systems
Solar power is rapidly becoming the preferred choice for sustainable energy. With the addition of several Government incentives, among other factors, solar is nearly the cheapest form of all energy (solar energy is on track to become the cheapest, beating coal out of its current #1 position)
Give Mom the gift of clean, free, everlasting energy for years to come by building her a solar tracker system. Solar trackers are far more efficient at gathering the sun’s energy because it follows the sun (to the degree which you set it). This maximizes the amount of exposure the panels get, while consuming very little energy in the process.
To make a solar tracker, a higher level of technical knowledge is required than many of the other home automation hacks for Mother’s Day listed here. That said, as with everything, there are levels of difficulty. One option is to DIY the entire project and make a solar tracker from scratch, including the battery charger and solar panels. The quicker, safer and easier (aka more expensive) option is to purchase the parts pre-assembled, put them together and add the code.
Is your mother do a lot of gardening in a greenhouse? If yes, then she would appreciate an automated greenhouse window/vent. Like indoor windows and heating/cooling HVAC vents, greenhouse windows/vents are easy to control in the same way. The window/vent will activate to the degree you program it, depending on the occurrence of the condition(s) that is dictated in the code.
Does Mom feed you with fresh, free-range, organic eggs from her own backyard? Backyard chickens are common even in urban areas and a question we often hear is, how to automate a chicken coop door with micro linear actuators. Opening and closing the chicken coop door in the wee hours of the early morning and late night is an unnecessary hassle and potential danger for your mom. Who knows what dreadful weather, predator or creep lurking in the dark she has to face?
While you’re at it, remind mommy dearest how much of a peach you are, and automate the chicken feed in a similar manner as well.
Once these home automation hacks for Mother’s Day are installed, you will feel like the perfect little angel you are (riiiight), while Mom is enjoying the confidence, control, and convenience that home automation brings.
Wishing you and your mom a very Happy Mother’s Day!
