5 Ways to Honor Martin Luther King Jr for Martin Luther King Jr Day
This week is special because we get to honor a great man on his day, Martin Luther King Jr Day.
He gave his life to bring peace, kindness and justice to our world – three things we can never have too much of.
Here are 5 Ways to Honor Martin Luther King Jr Day:
1. Give something back
Today you could honor Martin Luther King Jr by committing to give back to your community or loved ones.
There are many organizations that are always in need of your help, whether it’s your time or something you can give personally.
Here are some ideas you could do:
- Donate blood or marrow
- Volunteering for a community, pet rescue or food bank
- Gather blankets and coats for the homeless
- Give a friend a break by watching their children – for free
Spend time with your grandparents or helping out at an elderly home (also a great way to keep life’s perspective in check)
2. Learn something new
Obviously Martin Luther King Jr was an intelligent man. He knew that knowledge is power. You cannot make things better if you don’t have enough information.
Maybe you’re not looking to start a revolution, but you can still honor Martin Luther King Jr Day today by learning something new. By making yourself better, you also make the world better.
What have you always wanted to learn but keep putting off? Today, make a commitment to sign up for that class or read that book that you’ve been putting off.
3. Teach somebody something
We all know something about something. You have knowledge to share, even if you don’t realize it.
You could volunteer to read a book to children at a library, or help out at a Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Or perhaps teach a neighbours kid to play sports or even a silly dance move.
Do you know how to write, work on computers or create interesting art, woodwork or electronics? This week you can teach someone who is interested in something you know how to do.
4. Take action on your own dream
Most people live their lives dreaming about what they want to do.
There’s never been a better time than now to tack action and challenge yourself to stop dreaming and start doing!
A funny thing happens when you pursue your own dreams – you automatically inspire others to take action and do the same.
What’s something that you think about constantly? What do you see yourself doing in the future in your minds eye? How can you take one step to get closer to that goal this Monday?
There’s no Brad Pitt in Fight Club holding a gun to your head… but it’s YOUR life. And you only get to live it once. So what have you always wanted to do but never tried?
5. Be the change
Have you ever seen something and said, “oh someone should do something about that”? Well you’re someone aren’t you? Could you do something about that?
Every day you can inspire others by being best version of yourself you can be. The concept is pretty simple:
- If you don’t like how something is done, either don’t do it – or do something about it.
- If you don’t like needless waste, reuse and recycle.
- If you don’t like pollution, pick up that garbage on the ground (even if it’s not yours).
- If you don’t like bullying, don’t go along with others when they are teasing someone just so you won’t stand out.
If you don’t like the way something is done at work, find a way to do it better and propose your idea
You can be a leader simply by doing good in your world. You do not have to shout and preach. Simply go about your day and do something to make your surroundings better. When people see you taking action, they will follow.
These are only 5 Ways to Honor Martin Luther King Jr There are thousands of ways you can be an inspiration to those around you.
